Today is Richard III’s birthday, and the first one in a long while he hasn’t lain under a carpark. In literature he’s become one of the world’s great villains (“Plots have I laid, inductions dangerous!”). Whether that’s at all historically accurate is hard to say. It’s also Gandhi’s birthday, the birthday of Nat Turner, Ferdinand Foch, Paul von Hindenberg, and Cordell Hull. And it’s the Feast of the Guardian Angels. It’s also Phileas Fogg’s Wager Day and world smile day.
